We left Bora Bora on June 24, 2007 for a 5 day sail to the Cook Islands. It was hard to re-adjust to overnight sailing after spending so much time on anchor at all the beautiful Polynesian Islands.

The first few days, the sea was quite rough with swells up to 16 feet The wind was from all directions causing constant sail adjustments. But that was nothing compared to the storm that awaited us, probably the worst weather we have been in. The seas were even rougher with 20 foot walls of water (see pictures below) coming at us, splashing and crashing over the boat. The winds were high at 35 knots, constant. Our mainsail ripped and we had to plow through using only the reefed jib. The going was slow and added an extra night to the passage. We were fortunate to have a full moon that gave us some night vision. The Almighty Ocean was telling us that we must work to enjoy the treasures we seek…

Our gem was the Island of Rarotonga. We arrived at night on June 29, and were so happy to be on land after that crossing. The island is lush and tropical. We have been here for a week cleaning the salt off the boat, resting, hiking, and re-provisioning for our next passage which will be 600 miles to the island of Niue (another 5 day passage). We spent the 4th of July and our 24th Wedding Anniversary with some of our cruising pals…

The needle on Rarotonga. We climbed up to the base
of it and down the other side of the mountain.

Fourth of July on Rarotonga beach. We barbequed
with many dear sailing friends. It was great.

These are pictures of Manatee, she made the crossing
with us. Do you wish you were here?

Hey you two. How fun to see your smiling faces and the great photos of your adventures.

Page One is back in SF after a fast passage home. We are in Chico doing stuff to the house.

Miss you both and I promise to post something more insulting and rude the next time.

Continue living free and sailing fair.

Love,

Craig and Lamia

Dear Ken and Paula,

What great pics and posts! And 20 ft walls of water. Hummm... It all looks beautiful and you both look happy and healthy!

As Craig says, we are home now and fixing up the house. Lots to do and a left over Mexico habit of unfixed and random schedules makes the going slow.

We are planning a road trip up to Montana to see Craig's mom and some folks we met in Puerto Vallarta and then over to Seattle to see some of the grandbabies.

Sometime in 2009 (right?) when you pass through SF Bay, we can meet you with Page One, huh?

We do think of you often and know you are having an amazing adventure. I can tell by Ken's sh#*-eating grin!

Love Lamia

Hi Paula and Ken,

I am envious of all your amazing adventures, especially those of island hopping in paradise. You'll have to give us a full report of the best island to travel to for vacation one day. Or maybe we will just throw a dart on a map of French Polynesia and go wherever it takes us as they all sound and look magnificent so far.

I'm glad to hear you are hooking up with other sailing buddies. Hopefully you can continue to make those longer passages in tandem. And by the looks of things, you are not at a loss of connecting with others, young and old. Paula, those pics of you playing volleyball look just like you did in high school, in that ready stance to recieve a spike from your fierce apponents. Right on girl! Age has nothing on you! And you Ken, fixing up a treat for that little girl. Looks like that could be Melaina ten years back.

Things with us are good. We had an excellent time in the Yucatan. Life in the Mexican/Myan Riviera is slow and delicious and being in the tropics just makes us happy, happy, happy! We can't wait to get back and we are already considering our next trip there. Or maybe by the time we are ready and can afford it, we will meet up with you guys in some exotic place. As long as there is clear, clean water, swaying palms and white sandy beaches, we are there!

Jack is having a busy summer. He is in art camp this week, Orca Beach Camp in Santa Barbara next week, another local beach camp two weeks following and our annual family camp experience in the Santa Cruz mountains two weeks following. Family Camp is always the highlight of our year and this year, more of us are going as Elena and Julian will be coming too along wioth Maggie, Paul and Orion of course. Also, Kay has recently been hired to assist with another family that will be there who's daughter is deaf and disabled so our family group is expanding. Speaking of Kay, she recently moved to Goleta and will be starting at UCSB in September as a junior. Pete is having a busy summer too and will be in his second year at Chapman University in the fall. So life is good in general around here.

I have tried to conect with Melaina a few times but don't hear much from her. I hope you are all staying in touch and that all is well on the Olympia front.

Continue to have amazing experiences sans the 20 foot swells and raging seas. Be safe and journey on.

Love,
Tricia
